Augusta, Georgia is of course the home to the US Masters and the course in April will be blooming with dazzling pink fuchsia, white azaleas and festooned with the delicate lavender petals of delicate wisteria. The most famous spots not-to-be-missed are Amen Corner, the Nelson Bridge, the Par 3 fountain and an amazing panoramic view at the 13th hole.

The crowds at the Masters Golf 2012 are set to be some of the best behaved in the world and with good reason. Not much gets past the metal detectors at the entrance gate (cell phones and cameras included) but this lets you focus all your attention on the game. The Masters also differs to nearly every other golf tournament due to the fact that there are no advertising placards or corporate hospitality tents, which lets the course retain its beauty and authenticity.

Masters Golf 2012 | Who’s Going to Win ?

Qualifying to play in the US Masters Golf 2012 tournament is no mean feat.

Only the crème de la crème of the World’s top golfers will be invited to take part in this year’s competition and the trophy is often won by some of golf’s highest ranked players. This doesn’t mean that a surprise entrant doesn’t have a chance, far from it, and the Masters has had its fair share of surprises over the years. Whilst many famous American golfers have managed to win the Masters, it is also true that European players now have a strong presence at Augusta and the US Masters Golf 2012 will see many popular names returning.

The top 50 players in the World Rankings are presented with an automatic invite to the tournament and it’s worth taking a good look at the top 10 players of the moment:

  1. Luke Donald
  2. Lee Westwood
  3. Phil Mickelson
  4. Luke Donald
  5. Graeme McDowell
  6. Paul Casey
  7. Tiger Woods
  8. Steve Stricker
  9. Rory McIlroy
  10. Matt Kuchar

It’s no secret that Tiger Woods is the current favourite for a Masters Golf 2012 green jacket

after his recent Chevron tournament win which moved him up more than 20 spots in the Official World Golf Ranking. It was his first major win in two years and there’s no question that his form is certainly back on track.

Luke Donald, who nestles at the top of the World Rankings, should not be underestimated as everything the man does with a golf club turns to gold, except perhaps in Augusta. Could this be the year to change all that? Donald has an incredible reputation with his Ryder Cup wins, he plays well under pressure and it isn’t a long shot to suggest he might be taking home a sizeable share of the Masters Prize money this year.

In 2010 Phil Mickelson won the US Masters with an incredible final round as he fought back fierce competition from Lee Westwood. Mickelson always manages to pull off an impressive performance with his left hand magic, but some might argue that his form is a little inconsistent as of late.

Could it be Rory McIlroy to win the Masters Golf 2012 tournament? He was leading the Masters in 2011 before coming to a disastrous halt on the back nine, blowing a four shot lead as he entered the final round. The Irishman has a great game of golf as his disposal and would surprise no-one with a win here.

Finally let’s take a look at Lee Westwood. While he’s one of Europe’s top golfing stars, he’s yet to achieve a big win at a Major. Whilst his impressive career history totals 31 Professional wins, this man has something to prove and there’s a good chance we’ll see his name in lights before long.

The Masters Golf 2012 championship runs from the 5th – 8th April. It is one of the most sought after events in the sporting Calendar.

Masters Golf 2012 | But Where Did it all Begin?

The grounds where the Masters Golf 2012 will be held were purchased in 1931 and were known as ‘Fruitland Nurseries.

It was soon to become the famous birthplace of the Masters, but was initially known as the ‘Augusta National Golf Club.’ Doctor Alister Mackenzie was employed as the golf course architect and he supervised its construction. It acquired a clubhouse which had originally been built in 1854 as the home of Dennis Redmond and it was widely believed to be the first concrete house built in the south.

The inaugural tournament was held in 1934 and titled the ‘Augusta National Invitational Tournament.’ The competitors were virtually all American and you could expect to see names like Walter Hagan, Bobby Jones and Henry Picard lighting up the green with their swing. There were only a few galleries back then, due to the fact that people couldn’t travel long distances by air or train. The majority of spectators came by automobile and when you consider that the condition of the roads and top speed of the majority of cars wasn’t quite what it is today, it is understandable that most were either friends of the players or living locally.

Unlike a scene from the Masters Golf 2012, where you can expect to find a mass of media such as reporters, satellite vans, TV towers and commentator boxes; this technology wouldn’t arrive until approximately 20 years later, leaving beautifully quiet grounds for the players and spectators alike to enjoy.

In 1940, Lloyd Mangrum opened the Masters with an impressive round of 64, which was a record that would stand for over 45 years. The 1940s also saw every caddie in uniform coveralls which had to be white, exactly the same as you’ll see in the Masters Golf 2012 tournament today.

In 1943 – 1945 the Club was closed during the War years and it was used for raising cattle and turkeys. It wasn’t reopened until 1946, when a new 16th hole green was constructed. In this year a photographers’ tower was built at the 18th green and the prize money doubled in value.

The 1950s saw Jimmy Demaret become the first ever three-time Masters Champion. President Eisenhower had his own cabin built at Augusta, to Secret Service Guidelines, so he could enjoy the tournament himself. In 1956, CBS broadcast the first pictures of the Masters from holes 15 – 18. Arnold Palmer began his special relationship with the Masters in 1958, which is where he won the first of his four Green Jackets.

It wasn’t until 1960 that the first Par 3 Contest took place. In 1961 Gary Player became the first international winner of the Masters. 1963 saw Jack Nicklaus winning the very first of his six Masters titles. By this time the Masters tournament was becoming so popular that attendance limitations and advance purchasing of tickets had to be introduced.

Fuzzy Zoeller celebrated an exciting victory in 1979 with the Masters first sudden death playoff in the tournament’s history. The next year saw Seve Ballesteros as champion and he was the first European to win the title. Nick Faldo won his first Green Jacket with a 25-foot birdie in 1989 and he was the second player, after Jack Nicklaus, to win back-to-back titles in 1990. At 21 years of age, Tiger Woods became the youngest ever player to win the Masters in 1997 and set a record for the widest victory margin in the tournament’s history.
